The journey of Joshua is one of the most powerful illustrations of choosing faith over fear. Taking over leadership after Moses, Joshua faced enormous pressure, uncertainty, and responsibility. Yet, his story teaches us how to trust God in the face of overwhelming odds.
In Joshua 1:9, God commands him, “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” This was not just encouragement—it was a command. Fear is natural, but faith is a choice.
Joshua had seen fear destroy a generation. In Numbers 13–14, ten spies brought a fearful report, causing Israel to doubt God. Only Joshua and Caleb stood in faith. Their confidence was not in themselves, but in God’s promise.
Faith is rooted in God’s Word. Joshua was instructed to meditate on the law day and night (Joshua 1:8). Faith grows when you consistently engage with God’s truth.
One of Joshua’s greatest tests was the battle of Jericho. God’s strategy made no logical sense—march around the city and shout. Yet, Joshua obeyed. Faith often requires trusting God beyond understanding.
Fear focuses on obstacles; faith focuses on God. The walls of Jericho were real, but God’s power was greater. When the people acted in faith, the walls fell.
Faith also requires action. James 2:17 says faith without works is dead. Joshua didn’t just believe—he acted on God’s instructions.
The story of Joshua teaches that fear will always present itself, but it does not have to control you. Faith is choosing to believe God’s Word above your feelings.
